The NML Podcast: “Alive and High Kicking”
LGBTQ+ Culture in 1980s Liverpool
This is the first of a two part special where we look back at the 1980s through the lives and stories of the LGBTQ+ community in Liverpool.
Liverpool at the time was a place under great strain. Job prospects were low, crime rate was high. Anger and apathy were rife in the region.
The people we speak to in this podcast were emerging into their adulthood as LGBTQ+ people against this difficult backdrop, but they weren’t daunted. Quite the opposite. It created a contagious ‘nothing to lose’ attitude. They might have had no money, but they also had no restrictions. This fearless approach led to an explosion of creativity and community.
Our five guests, Carl, Nick, Maria, Gerry and James take us back in time. We hear about the importance and prevalence of performance, visual arts and club culture as a release and escape from the ‘real world’. They tell us how staples of Liverpool culture such as the Everyman Theatre, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and the Masquerade helped them grow, learn and belong. Ultimately, we learn about their lives and how against the odds they were alive and high kicking.
