“I’m a wartime president. This is a war. This is a war. A different kind of war than we’ve ever had.” ~ Donald Trump
A Homotopia Commission
Blitz Spirit is an exploration of the use of wartime language enthusiastically employed by politicians and commentators during the COVID-19 crisis.
The UK Government’s Zoom meetings are a “virtual cabinet war room” while we’re all being asked to “do our bit”. Are we really “at war” with coronavirus?
Join political Illustrator Leyla Reynolds as she interrogates the nostalgic readiness with which this language has entered the mainstream, while questioning the trauma it holds for communities who have historically been the butt of state violence and marginalized within mainstream society (including People Of Colour, D/deaf and disabled people and LGBTQIA folks).
A series of 5 illustrated portraits of the main players propagating this response will be printed on bio-degradable stickers and displayed in the public space, mimicking the experience of encountering a WWII propaganda poster.
We’ll be taking photos of the stickers and posting them to our Instagram account over the next couple of months. Keep an eye on instagram/homotopiafest.
