HOMOTOPIA WINS BT AWARD FOR MOST ORIGINAL FLOAT

Homotopia has been awarded the BT prize for most original float as part of the
last Saturday’s Lord Mayors Parade. For the second year running and in
partnership with the Armistead Project this years float was a tribute to gay
writer Oscar Wilde. As a tribute to Wilde the float was titled ‘The Love
That Dare Speak Its Name’. The float was a mobile Victorian theatre resplendent
with a large scale Oscar Wilde bust and oversized handbag.
The Armistead Youth groups were instrumental in designing and making the costumes
which were a fusion of Victoriana and Punk. The float was a collaboration with
Armistead Project, award winning theatre-makers and puppeteers Walk The Plank
and ‘Liverpool Lantern Company’. The theme of the float was an epic
homage to one of the worlds most famous gay icons whereby boys love boys and
girls love girls. The emergence of a ‘Queer’ float is a sign that
Liverpool is at last recognising the importance of its LGBT communities.
Gary Everett Festival Director, Homotopia commented ‘It is great
news that our float has been recognised as everyone has worked incredibly
hard to create
such a unique and quirky tribute to Oscar. The involvement of community groups
and festivals such as Homotopia and Armistead gives artists and community groups
the chance to work together, to express in creative, challenging and humorous
ways the public reaction to the changes taking place all around us.
