The Killing of Sister George

killingofsistergeorgeThis year’s festival theme ‘Liberation’ marks the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. The 1967 Sexual Offenses Act referred to sex between men but throughout the festival we’ll be asking ‘Where are the lesbians?’.

Homotopia presents a special screening of the ‘The Killing of Sister George’ starring Beryl Reid, Coral Browne and Susanna York. This Robert Altman classic features scenes shot at the famous Gateways club. “The Gates” was one of the few places in the UK where lesbians could meet openly during the 40s, 50s and 60s.

The screening will be followed by a presentation and Q&A with academic and cultural historian Jill Gardiner. Jill’s writing includes the book, “From the Closet to the Screen: Women at the Gateways Club, 1945-85”.
