Gay director Royston Tan's last film, 15, was so heavily censored by the Singaporean
authorities that he made a short film about the process called Cut. Nothing
changed, of course: his next film would still have to be unobjectionable to
get any funding - no sex, no drugs, no violence. The result, however, is an
even better film, 4.30 (the title refers to 4.30am, the loneliest time of
night) - the gentle story of an inquisitive little boy living with a suicidal
'uncle' that manages to be funny, charming and captivating.
